Jetboating on Waiau Gorge, Hanmer Springs, New Zealand

Thanks to Welcome Aboard (Christchurch)

I wrote about my trip to Christchurch not long ago, which I was fortunate enough to take through my work as a travel consultant. While a good part of our trip entailed surveying the damage done by the recent earthquake, we were also taken out of Christchurch to the stunning Hanmer Springs for a day. The highlight was without a doubt the jetboat ride on Waiau Gorge, thanks to the guys at!

Everything about this place is perfect; the bright yellow flowers, the perfect green foliage, the ice blue water, the clear skies, and the air. It is just so clean and fresh… breathing it in felt like it was cleaning our your lungs, it was really amazing..

Anyway, the jetboating… you can’t underestimate just how incredible it feels to be sent hurtling along this perfect body of water at 80km per hour, feeling as though you’re barely touching the surface, and at the same time, trusting that your boat driver isn’t going to send you crashing into the rocks lining either side of the river! When they spin the boat out 360˚, your heart lodges itself in your stomach, and you want to squeal like you’re on top of the world! It’s a feeling of crazy, reckless abandonment, of being able to fully enjoy and appreciate life, of being completely free…

The guys at Thrillseekers really looked after us, and you could tell that they really loved what they did – how could you not?! I’d highly recommend this to anyone heading over in the general Christchurch region. And the hands down best thing about it? This view as our boat was turned around to head back to where we started from…. holy wow…

Great post and excellent blog. I look forward to following along since I have all of the same interests you mention in your tagline above.

    • It sure is, such a beautiful and underrated place!

And ditto right back at ya – loving the stuff I’ve read from you so far, your pictures are perfect and great inspiration to me to try to get to that level!
